Morrissey’s formula still clicks with fans
Morrissey is still melodramatic after all these years, and fans love him for it.
The British singer’s last studio album — the one that led off with the song “Something Is Squeezing My Skull” — failed to produce a hit single, but still debuted at No. 11.
You can credit his high chart position to loyal fans. Since leading the Smiths in the 1980s, Morrissey hasn’t tinkered much with his formula.
From early tracks such as “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” and “Girlfriend in a Coma” to his more recent output, the man has continually sung pop music that borders on a comic sense of depression.
He will play Seattle at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Paramount Theatre, 911 Pine St., Seattle; $52 to $72; stgpresents.org or 877-784-4849.
Less Than Jake: Basically, Less than Jake is your quintessential 1990s ska band.
Its music has all the requisite parts: huge pop hooks, a bouncing horn section and lyrics that blend angst with goofball humor and sarcasm.
The group is touring behind its 2008 album, “GNV FLA.” The album, a tribute to Less Than Jake’s hometown of Gainesville, Fla., was released on the group’s own label, Sleep It Off Records.

The Moondoggies: They may be on a Seattle record label now, but the Moondoggies got their start at Cascade High School.
The group, which released its 2008 debut on Seattle’s Hardly Art Records, formed when three of its four members were attending the Everett school. That record showcased the bands love for 1960s folk pop bands such as the Byrds.
The Moondoggies will swing through the Northwest as they continue a national tour that will take them to the East Coast this January.
Alt-country group Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter opens the show.

Blind Pilot: You have to give this indie pop band credit.
To sell some of their EPs, the two-man band bicycled down the West Coast, playing shows in Washington, California and their home state of Oregon.
Based on their current tour schedule — they play Denver one night, Salt Lake City the next — one imagines they’ve upgraded to a van.
