Silvertips overpowered in 4-2 loss

Regina schools Everett on the fine art of the power play

EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips were taught a lesson on how to run a power play Friday night.

The Regina Pats power play treated Everett’s penalty killers as if they were intangible, passing their way around, between and seemingly through the Tips on their way to a 4-2 victory at Comcast Arena.

Jordan Eberle scored an empty-net goal to complete his hat trick as Regina finished 3-for-5 on the power play. Each of the three power-play goals came within 25 seconds of the power play’s start.

“A guy like Eberle, he’s a world-class player,” Everett coach Craig Hartsburg said. “He’s the guy who runs the thing. That’s why he’s a great player at the World Junior tournament and he’ll be a another great player at the World Junior tournament this year.”

Cody Carlson also scored on the power play for Regina (15-12-3-0) and Damien Ketlo made 34 saves in net for the Pats. Ketlo turned in an inspired 20-save performance in the third period, including a stunning stick save on Kellan Tochkin in the final minutes to prevent the Tips from tying it up.

Ketlo’s efforts helped the Pats shut out Everett’s power play, which went 0-for-8 as special teams were the determining factor.

“We had one bad weekend against Moose Jaw where they scored like nine power-play goals against us,” Regina coach Curtis Hunt said about his team’s penalty kill. “Ever since then we’ve been really consistent. But the penalty kill is only as good as your goaltender a lot of nights and that’s where Ketlo really responded.”

Shane Harper and Chris Langkow scored to continue their strong recent play for Everett (15-8-1-0), and Thomas Heemskerk had a solid effort in goal for the Tips with 36 saves.

However, Friday’s contest continued Everett’s worrying trend on special teams. In their past seven games, the Tips have been hammered in the special teams battle, scoring on just four of their 37 power plays (10.8 percent) while allowing their opponents to convert 12 of their 34 chances (35.3 percent).

And Hartsburg addressed the special teams issues, particularly on the power play, by calling out some of his skill players.

“Your so-called skill guys are supposed to get it done on the power play,” Hartsburg said. “Right now (Byron) Froese and Tochkin, their games aren’t acceptable. They’re not getting much done five-on-five and they’re certainly not helping us on the power play. Their intensity level has to pick up or they won’t have much success. All they have to do is take a page out of Langkow’s and Harper’s book. They’re moving their feet, they’re tenacious and they created chances. That other group’s game has to raise right now.”

Indeed, the Tips never threatened on the power play until their final two opportunities, down 3-2 in the game’s last 10 minutes. Ketlo moved well laterally to deny Tyler Maxwell midway through the third on the power play. Then in the final three minutes both Langkow and Tochkin thought they had goals. However, Langkow’s mysteriously stayed out, while Ketlo somehow dived to his right and stuck out his stick to make a point-blank save on Tochkin, who was already celebrating the tying goal.

The special teams mismatch caused the Tips to squander an early 2-0 lead.

Regina had the shots in the first period, outshooting Everett 17-8, but the Tips got the early goals. Everett opened the scoring at 11 minutes, 36 seconds when Radko Gudas kept the puck in the offensive zone and got it to Harper down low, who got his shot through Ketlo from a tight angle. The Tips went up 2-0 at 16:03 when, during a delayed penalty, Langkow spun in the right circle and shoveled a backhander past Ketlo.

But the Pats kept it close with a power-play goal with just 5.4 seconds remaining in the period, Carlson ghosting in from the point and firing past Heemskerk from the slot to make it a one-goal contest.

Regina then scored another power-play goal 8:55 into the second period to tie it up, Eberle putting in a loose puck in front. Both of Regina’s goals came within 24 seconds of the power play beginning.

The Pats finally took the lead 3:42 into the third period on yet another quick power-play marker. This time the Tips defense intercepted an attempted pass across, but the deflection went right to Eberle, who scored what proved to be the winning goal while Heemskerk was moving the opposite direction.
