Toy hamsters lose their novelty

Toy droppings: State Attorney General Rob McKenna has some tips for holiday shoppers that could save money and hassle. Among the tips: Read the fine print on rebates; write down the number on gift cards; and know each store's return policy.

We'll throw in a few tips of our own: You'll spend less if you leave your wallet at home; $10 toy hamsters lose their novelty before the batteries die; and nobody really wants a slanket.

More than three is a crowd: Snohomish has told a kennel operator that she has too many dogs. City rules allow only three of any type of animal. But an official admits that if you have four gerbils, no one's likely to complain.

After taking care of four gerbils, though, maybe electronic hamsters don't seem like such a bad gift.

Just pick one already: The U.S. Air Force is expected to announce its rules for the long-delayed and much-contested contest between Boeing and the combined Northrup Grumman-EADS for the refueling tanker contract.

The rule we'd like to see: No whining from the loser.
