NFL NOTEBOOK: Eli Manning has stress reaction

NEW YORK — Giants quarterback Eli Manning has developed a stress reaction in his right foot that could eventually lead to further injuries which might sideline him indefinitely.

A person familiar with Manning’s injury told The Associated Press about the latest problem Sunday. The team has not officially confirmed the problem.

Manning has suffered from plantar fasciitis — an injury to the band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and inserts into the heel — since hurting the foot against Kansas City on Oct. 4.

Concussion rules to expand?

NEW YORK — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reportedly will expand restrictions on returning to games for players who sustain head trauma.

Fox Sports reported Sunday that Goodell will issue a memo this week to all 32 teams expanding grounds for the removal of a player with a head injury or concussion.

The report said that if a player is “woozy, has general dementia or memory loss,” Goodell wants him barred from returning to a game.

Falcons lose Ryan, Turner

Atlanta lost offensive stars Matt Ryan and Michael Turner to injuries Sunday, and the Falcons wouldn’t say how serious they are.

Ryan, the second-year quarterback, hurt his big right toe on Atlanta’s first series in a 20-17 victory over Tampa Bay. Turner reinjured his right ankle during the third quarter.

Also, Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson suffered a concussion in Philadelphia’s 27-24 win over Washington.

Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez left New York’s 17-6 win over the Carolina Panthers for four plays with a left knee injury. After the game, Sanchez said he was totally fine.

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman left San Diego’s 43-14 win over the Chiefs with a foot injury in the second quarter and did not return.

RB Johnson matches NFL mark

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee running back Chris Johnson matched the NFL record shared by Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson with his sixth straight game rushing for at least 125 yards.

Johnson topped 125 yards with an 85-yard touchdown run in the third quarter Sunday against Arizona, giving him 150 yards on 15 carries. Campbell set the mark in 1980 when the Titans were the Houston Oilers, and Dickerson matched him in 1984.

LT passes Marcus Allen, E. James

SAN DIEGO — LaDainian Tomlinson passed Marcus Allen and Edgerrin James on the NFL’s all-time rushing list Sunday. Tomlinson passed the Hall of Famer Allen on his sixth carry against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, a 5-yard gain late in the first quarter that gave him 12,244 yards. Allen had 12,243 yards.

He passed Edgerrin James (12,246) on an 8-yard run in the second.

Tomlinson had 39 yards on 13 carries, giving him 12,257 for his career.
