Tip a firefighter; you'll make a child's day
By Kristi O'Harran Herald Columnist
In Lake Stevens, heroes give back to their community.
Tips for Firefighters is planned for 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Ixtapa, 303 91st Ave. NE, Suite B201, Lake Stevens.
Pat Cook, a firefighter in Lake Stevens, says it's the sixth annual event. Firefighters clear tables to collect extra tips to buy Christmas presents for needy children.
It's been a success to date.
“We have collected over $25,000 and purchased Christmas presents for over 300 children,” Cook says. “We work with the Lake Stevens Family Center. They provide the names of children with their Christmas wish list.”
They spend $75 on each child at Target and each child receives a $25 gift card for clothes. The family also gets a $25 gift card for groceries.
“I've always tried to help the community of Lake Stevens outside of the fire department,” Cook says. “I started this five years ago and I am blown away by the outpouring of our community and the support for our kids in need.”
When he was a teacher in Lake Stevens, Cook started an automatic external defibrillator program and raised money to put AEDs in all district schools.

More than 100 men at the Everett Gospel Mission received new socks, thanks to Hillcrest Elementary School in the Lake Stevens School District and the family of Katrina Fuller.
Fuller says her family began collecting socks for the homeless on a small scale.
“The project gained momentum and folks at the Clearview Community Center and kids at Hillcrest Elementary School joined the cause,” Fuller says. “I have truly been amazed at the outreach of the community for something so simple yet so important.”
Monday, they also delivered more than 100 pairs of socks to the women's shelter. Both shelters also received hats and scarves.

Those who have watched children squeal with delight at water features understand these awards.
KING-TV 2009 Best of Western Washington voters selected Forest Park in Everett as the top park and Willis Tucker Park in Snohomish as the No. 4 ranked playground.

Both parks feature kid-favorite spray pads that shoot water like willy-nilly sprinklers.
