FIRST AMENDMENT Free speech means all of it, even ‘hate’ The Friday letter from an Everett Community College student, “Campus no place for hate speech,” reveals an unfortunate trend in higher education: the trumping of our First Amendment rights to free speech by assertions that speech that makes us uncomfortable is “hate speech.” I am no fan of Lyndon LaRouche, whose representatives appeared at the writer’s college, but I staunchly support their right to appear in a public place and present their opinion.It sounds to me like the writer has no problem with the concept of free speech, as long as she is in agreement with it. Somehow I don’t think that’s what the Founders had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Mark Parker Snohomish |
