NBA ROUNDUP: Dallas burns 76ers 104-102 as Iverson rumors grow
DALLAS — While Dallas keeps finding ways to win, Philadelphia may be closer to reuniting with Allen Iverson in hopes of turning around its bleak start.
Seattle native Jason Terry made a 17-footer with 1.4 seconds left, Dirk Nowitzki had 28 points and the Dallas Mavericks handed the Philadelphia 76ers their seventh-straight loss, 104-102 Monday night.
“He hit a great shot,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. “It’s a great win even though we had a lead and they got it back even. I liked the way we fought them off at the end and were able to finish the game.”
Jason Kidd chipped in with a season-high 22 points and 11 assists. The Mavericks blew a 17-point lead before winning on Terry’s shot.
Drew Gooden scored 15 points with 10 rebounds and Shawn Marion had 14 points while playing on a gimpy left ankle.
Andre Iguodala hit a 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds remaining to tie it at 102. He missed badly on a desperation jumper at the buzzer.
Willie Green scored a season-high 23 points, and Elton Brand and Thaddeus Young each had 21 for the 76ers, who met with Allen Iverson earlier Monday to discuss a possible return to the team.
“That’s one of the areas that I like to get to,” Terry said of his shot. “I pump faked and he didn’t go for it. I went up, it was clear, and the rest was history.”
The 76ers shot 33 percent in the first half. They shot nearly 50 percent after halftime and enjoyed a huge rebounding advantage, 60-37.
Warriors 126, Pacers 107
OAKLAND, Calif. — Monta Ellis scored a career-high 45 points, Anthony Morrow added 18 and the injury-riddled Golden State Warriors beat the Indiana Pacers 126-107 on Monday night.
Bucks 99, Bulls 97
MILWAUKEE — Andrew Bogut returned from an injury with 22 points, 15 rebounds and two big blocks in the closing minutes to rally Milwaukee past Chicago after squandering a big lead.
Brad Miller missed a shot at the buzzer that would’ve tied it after Derrick Rose, who had 17 of his 19 points in the second half, decided to pass up the final opportunity as Chicago lost its fifth straight.
Jazz 120, Grizzlies 93
SALT LAKE CITY — Carlos Boozer had 24 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists and Utah tied their season-best winning streak with their third straight victory.
The Jazz scored their most points this season and beat the Grizzlies for the 10th straight time, going 45-for-77 from the floor and hitting seven of 14 3-pointers.
O.J. Mayo had 20 points to lead the Grizzlies, who fell to 2-9 on the road.
Iverson meets with 76ers
PHILADELPHIA — Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers met to discuss a possible return to the team Monday.
Team president Ed Stefanski said in a statement that both parties remain noncommittal about a final decision.
Iverson, his agent and business manager met with Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization during the first formal meeting between the Sixers and their former MVP.
The 10-time All-Star, who retired last week, is among the free-agent candidates the Sixers are considering to replace injured point guard Lou Williams, who’s expected to miss eight weeks after jaw surgery.
Iverson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft, played 10-plus seasons with the 76ers.
AP: Nets to tap Vandeweghe
New Jersey Nets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe is set to become the team’s coach for the rest of the season.
He doesn’t have to worry about being on the bench for a potential record-setting loss, though.
Vandeweghe won’t coach his first game with the team until Friday, a person with knowledge of the team’s plans told The Associated Press on Monday. The person requested anonymity because the Nets don’t plan to announce their plans until a press conference Tuesday morning.
Tom Barrise, who led the team Sunday night after Lawrence Frank was fired, will coach again Wednesday against Dallas, when the Nets can set an NBA record with an 18th straight loss to begin a season.
Former NBA head coach Del Harris will join the Nets as Vandeweghe’s assistant. The pair previously worked together in Dallas.
Thunder deal with injuries
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder says guard Kevin Ollie underwent successful “minor” surgery Monday to relieve pain in the patellar tendon in his right knee.
Another Thunder guard, Kyle Weaver, also was scheduled to have surgery on his separated shoulder, an injury he suffered last week during practice.
Hinrich out with sprained thumb
CHICAGO — Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich will be out one to two weeks with a sprained left thumb, an injury he got during a practice last week while the team was on a West Coast road trip.
Hinrich was examined Monday by Bulls head team physician Dr. Brian Cole and hand specialists Dr. John Fernandez and Dr. Marc Cohen of Midwest Orthopedics at Rush University.
