    Timeout with … Brandon Hill

    Senior, Glacier Peak basketball

When Brandon Hill graduates from Glacier Peak High School, he hopes to leave behind more than great sports memories.

A smooth-shooting guard on Glacier Peak’s state-ranked boys hoops team, Hill is the second-year school’s ASB president. Besides gearing up for the 2009-10 winter sports season, Hill has been building a foundation for Grizzlies students.

“This year I’ve been trying to create a whole bunch of traditions because we’re a new school,” said Hill, who has a 4.0 grade-point average and wants to be an engineer. “We kind of lack some tradition. I’ve been really trying to create a legacy that future ASB students can live up to.”

One idea Hill has is to let every senior class design a small crest that will adorn a large wall in the cafeteria commons.

Hill has also tried to promote a friendly rivalry with nearby Jackson High. On the court, he will do his best to make sure Glacier Peak has the edge.

    Coach’s corner

Last season Hill earned All-Wesco South first team honors after averaging a team-high 15.4 points. He made 54 of 136 3-point attempts (39.7 percent) and 104 of 120 free throws (86.7 percent). Unlike some marquee scorers, Hill is an outstanding defender on the perimeter. “He’s definitely an achiever. He definitely pushes himself and sets goals,” Glacier Peak coach Brian Hunter said.

    They’re all back

Glacier Peak didn’t have seniors last season, which means that every Grizzly player returns this winter. In the Tacoma News Tribune Class 3A preseason rankings, Glacier Peak is No. 7. “We definitely have more confidence going into this year,” said Hill, “but we still understand that we’re not a team that can just walk out and just win games. We’re still going to have to put in 100-percent effort every game (and get) all the loose balls.”

    Terrific trio

Glacier Peak relies heavily on its guards, which includes the stellar trio of Hill, Drew Cummins and Nick Persha. They combined to average 32.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists last season. “With the three of us, it’s really nice,” Hill said, “because if one of us isn’t playing the best game there’s two other guys that can kind of pick up the slack.”

    Family ties

Hill’s sister, Torrey Hill, is a sophomore guard/wing on the Glacier Peak girls basketball team. Her head coach is Brian Hill — the uncle of Torrey and Brandon.

    Favorite TV show

Hill always watches NBC’s “The Office.” “I love it. We’ve got all the seasons on DVD,” said Hill, whose favorite character is Dwight Schrute, played by Rainn Wilson. “He’s great,” Hill said, “because he takes everything to the complete, hardcore max.”
