Man failed to scrape windshield before crashing into Everett school bus EVERETT — About two dozen Everett High School students were uninjured this morning when a car rammed into the back of their school bus, officials said.The students were being transported to campus in the Olympic Boulevard area around View Ridge at around 7 a.m. when the collision occurred. The driver was ticketed for negligent driving, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said. The man couldn’t see out his windshield because he hadn’t scraped the frost off. The car received extensive damage but the bus just appeared to have a bent tail pipe, officials said. A second bus was dispatched to take the students to school as a precaution, said Mary Waggoner, a school district spokeswoman. “No students were injured,” Waggoner said. With winter weather moving into the region, drivers are reminded to clear their windshields before hitting the road, Goetz said. |

People, take the advice of someone who has lived in central and eastern Wa as well as Colorado- and I hardly ever have to scrape my windshield.
Step one: check weather forecast for tomorrow. If it is going to be cold enough to frost (and that is 40degrees or less since the car seems to always be in a "cold spot") go to step two.
Step two: take a cardboard box or other such item and place it under your wipers on the windshield.
Viola! in the morning you just remove the cover and have a nice clean windshield.
This has suited me well in snow, freezing rain, frosty conditions etc. Also get some of that nice ice melt wiper fluid. If you start off to work and go through a foggy spot it can save your life at 60mph on the freeway as your windshield can fog up in a second even with the defroster going full blast. The guy in front of you in your lane WILL slam his brakes on (for some reason) since his vision is now obscured.
One morning in the Tri Cities I came out to find 2 inches of ice on my car. Guess what? That WILL NOT MELT and you cannot scrape it. Try it. You will like it.

I'm not sure what the rules are out where I live, but I start my car and de-ice it... but I also have it locked up and get in with my extra set of keys. Thus, nobody can just jump in and drive away, they'd have to break in first; and if they are willing to do that, surely they could hot-wire it just as quick. As additional insurance, I drive a stick, which is apparently a dying ability.... :)
Not sure why we keep trying to put the responsibility for right decisions on the good citizens and keep letting the criminals argue that it's the good citizens "fault" for "tempting" them beyond what they can stand or whatever. Why its a crime to start your car in your own driveway is beyond me. The car thieves should be punished for stealing, period.
Personal responsibility is not optional in life in my opinion.But you sure wouldn't know it by our legal system anymore.
Like the other person pointed out, around here, if you drive without your car warmed up, the chances are your windows will re-freeze until the car warms up!

IF ITS ICY OUT DONT START YOUR CAR THEN GO BACK IN UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR CAR OR TRUCK STOLEN.GRAB YOUR STUFF THEN HEAD OUT. I HAVE HEARD REAL STORIES OF PEOPLE GOING OUT TO START THERE VEHICLE AND SOMEONE SEES A CAR RUNNING AND JUMPS RIGHT IN AND TAKES OFF. SO DONT START VEHICLE UNLESS YOUR IN IT AND TO TAKE OFF.

Actually the only really safe way is to completely warm up your car first. That way it can't "re-ice". So start your car first then go back in and gather your lunch and things. Then within a couple minutes your car will be warmed up properly and safely....oh wait that's right your a criminal if you do that..many cities made it illegal to do this in order that the poor car thieves won't be tempted to jack your car. Never-mind.

I wouldnt suggest people in any part of Everett leave a car runninh unattended. Every winter you read about some one who's car was stolen while they left the vehicle to warm up. A crminal is an opertunist, stay with the car while its running. It might suck to be cold but you will not become a statistic. Or made fun of on a blog by some one who asks why the car was left unattended.

Sure, this man was an idiot for not scrapping his car. But, unfortunately, this is not just an Everett problem. Apparently, it is a Western Washington problem. I have seen others driving when they clearly cannot see out the windshield or with an inch of snow on the back windshield. I don't know what the problem is, but this is the first state I have ever lived in where people apparently have NO idea how to drive in wintery conditions. Is it just because it is relatively mild here? Regardless, winter happens, and it happens every year. Its not even just a winter problem here though.. it seems people can only drive in perfect conditions. If its raining, snowing, sleeting, foggy ANYTHING.. people immediately freak out. Give me a break!

Anyone moronic enough to drive through a windshield covered with ice/frost with limited/restricted visibility has no business operating a motor vehicle. License should be automatically suspended for stupidity, substantial fine and a one year education program on how to scrape a windshield. Thankfully none of the kids were hurt.

I'm not very surprised to hear this. I have never had so many scares as a pedestrian as I have in Everett. Yesterday my daughter told me she was almost hit twice on Hoyt walking the one block home from the school bus stop. One of them was a U.S. postal truck. Today, I was nearly ran down by a white van. Sad that I feel we need body armor and flashing lights just to walk to the store. No one uses blinkers if they don't see other cars; so if you're a pedestrian you don't know whether or not to walk across a driveway or if a car is going to suddenly turn on you. People drive crazy here.
