Man’s car plunges into Lake Stevens

LAKE STEVENS — A car wound up upside down in the lake on Tuesday afternoon after it went off the road.

The driver of a 1990 Ford Escort was southbound on E. Lake Stevens Road just south of Third Street NE about 3:30 p.m. when he apparently lost control of his car, which plunged into the water, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

“The car ended up on its roof in about a foot of water,” she said.

The driver, a 21-year-old Snohomish-area man, made it out of the car safely and he wasn’t seriously hurt.

Some gas and oil from the car spilled into the lake and state Department of Ecology workers were summoned, Lake Stevens Fire Department Battalion Chief Travis Hots said. Firefighters set up special booms to protect the lake. State crews are expected back today to finish the cleanup, he said.
