PREP ROUNDUP: Marysville-Pilchuck gains valuable experience

MARYSVILLE — When every player on your team lacks any varsity experience, it's tough playing the first game of the season against a difficult non-conference opponent.

The Marysville-Pilchuck boys basketball team held its own with Woodinville for a while, trailing by seven at the half. But the Falcons outscored M-P 19-7 in the third quarter and were 8-for-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter for a 58-42 win at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Wednesday night.

“The third quarter was the game-breaker for us,” M-P head coach Bary Gould said. “Our defense broke down and they started getting to the rim.”

M-P pulled to within eight points in the fourth quarter, when senior captain Lucas Stevens scored all 11 of his points, draining three, 3-pointers in the scoring stretch.

But Woodinville was able to hit some free throws to seal the victory.

“We gave it a valiant effort there at the end,” Gould said. “We scheduled good non-conference opponents. All 10 guys, it's their first varsity experience. Its a good guage for us, and to get those first-time jitters out of the way.”

Ryan Shannon, a 6-5 sophomore, was impressive with 12 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in his varsity debut.
