No announcement this weekend, but AP says Figgins deal is done

Posted at 7:14 pm by By Kirby Arnold

The Associated Press has just moved a story saying the Mariners and Chone Figgins have agreed on a four-year, $36 million contract. The Mariners continue to have no comment, and no announcement will be made this weekend.

AP is basing its report on an unidentified source familiar with the contract. It said the deal is subject to a physical exam of Figgins and "includes a vesting option for 2014 that could make the deal worth $45 million over five years."

That's pretty heavy money for a player who isn't the home-run threat the Mariners badly need. But the Mariners also value a hitter who extends an at-bat and makes life tough on the opposing pitcher, then harrasses the other team into mistakes when he's on base. Figgins is definitely that guy.

Figgins Deal is Excellent
Figgins is a great player, has excellent defense, good batting average, walks a lot, and an on base percentage of 391! He is the kind of player who will create opportunities, move base runners, steal bases. Wow, great job Z. Yes, not much power, but we need to get that in LF, 1B, and maybe at 2B. Come on Kirby, the glass is already half full and the winter meetings have not yet started. Yes, $9 million per year is big bucks, but tell me this, how many times last year did we start an inning with one, or two, or three men on base, no outs, and get NO runs?? I think Figgins will create some runs.
