Connell beats Cascade Christian to win Class 1A state title

TACOMA — Nathan Martinez threw three touchdown passes in the first half to help lead Connell to a 28-7 victory over Cascade Christian in the Washington Class 1A championship game Saturday.

Connell (14-0), of Eastern Washington, won its second state title. The Eagles won the 2A title in 2002.

Cascade Christian (13-1), of Puyallup, had hoped to win its first state title. The Cougars lost 10-9 to Cashmere in last years championship game.

Martinez completed 8-of-11 passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns to help give the Eagles a 21-0 halftime lead. He finished 10 of 17 for 186 yards.

Martinez threw touchdown passes of 86 and 3 yards to Shane Didier as well as a 42-yard toss to Matt Hadley.

Didier opened the scoring late in the first quarter when he caught a pass at the Connell 40 and raced 60 yards after the catch down the right sideline. Didier is the son of former NFL receiver Clint Didier, now the Connell offensive coordinator.

Didier grabbed his second touchdown catch on a fourth-and-goal at the Cascade Christian 3 with 3:47 left in the second quarter. Didier had three receptions for 101 yards.

Hadley scored with only four seconds left in the first half when he caught a Martinez pass at the Cascade Christian 25 and sped down the middle of the field for the touchdown.

Hadley rushed for 84 yards on 11 carries in the opening half. He finished with 107 yards on 20 carries.

Connell held the Cougars to 12 yards rushing on 11 carries in the first half. The Cougars had 59 yards passing.

Didier helped slow the Cascade Christian passing attack with an interception and several pass deflections.

Colton Faverty scored on a 28-yard run for Cascade Christian early in the third quarter to make it 21-7. Faverty had 83 yards on 12 carries.

Dyrel Whitby scored on an 11-yard run to make it 28-7 late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles controlled the ball for seven minutes as Whitby and Hadley alternated running the ball.
