by Jerry Cornfield Who do you think will become the next Snohomish County prosecuting attorney and what do you think will be the final vote of the county council?
Jim Kenny, Mark Roe and Millie Judge are under consideration.
It's really between Kenny, who works for the Seattle city attorney's office, and Roe, who is a veteran of the Snohomish County prosecuting attorney's office. Both men had begun campaigns to succeed Janice Ellis in 2010. They are now competing sooner because she left office early for a new job.
Kenny is the top choice of the local and state Democratic Party based on a vote of precinct committee officers last month. Roe's supporters say the council should view the vote as a recommendation not a dictate.
The county council has four Demcrats and one Republican. Those four Democrats are under a lot of pressure as they weigh the issues of loyalty to party and personal preference.
Here's how I size it up at this point.
Republican John Koster supports Roe. Democrat Brian Sullivan endorsed Roe for 2010 before the appointment process began. Democrat Mike Cooper voted for Kenny at the PCO meeting and has endorsed him for 2010.. Democrat Dave Gossett voted for Kenny at the PCO meeting and has not backed anyone for 2010.. Democrat Dave Somers has not backed anyone for 2010. (Sullivan and Somers reportedly attended the PCO meeting but were not eligible to vote.)
It seems clear Koster will vote for Roe and Cooper for Kenny regardless.
If all the Democrats align together it would wind up 4-1 for Kenny. If all but Cooper join Koster it will wind up 4-1 for Roe.
Many are thinking it will be 3-2 with Somers casting the deciding vote. For whom is the big question.
DOH!! You're right Curt. Forgot about the 10% rule - this is why I'm not a Parliamentarian. My apologies. Jeff Craig | Dec 10, 2009 7:47 pm | 0 replies | Request removal
Sullivan was not a PCO Brian was not a PCO as his vote in the election was less than the 10% rule. I hand carried his application for appointment to PCO to the Democratic Office last week and he will shortly be one. Curt Eidem | Dec 10, 2009 3:51 am | 0 replies | Request removal
