Confrontation led to elderly man's death, police say
EDMONDS — A Lynnwood-area man has been arrested in connection with his elderly father's death.
Investigators believe an argument between the suspect, 56, and his father, 88, late last month turned physical. Police say the suspect slapped his father twice on the side of the head. The blows were hard enough to knock the hearing aids out of his ears, Snohomish County sheriff's spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
The elderly man died Wednesday. Police arrested his son Sunday and booked him into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of second-degree murder.
Investigators believe the dispute arose out of allegations that were made on Thanksgiving against the elderly man. The suspect and his college-aged daughter were at the victim's house for the holiday. The woman complained that the elderly man inappropriately touched her, Hover said. Later the suspect allegedly witnessed a second incident involving his father and his daughter.
A couple of days later the suspect returned to his father's house to confront him. The elderly man denied inappropriately touching the suspect's daughter. Police believe the two men were arguing when the suspect slapped his father, Hover said.
The victim became ill on Dec. 1 and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Doctors discovered that he had a head injury. The man's wife later told doctors about the fight that happened several days earlier between her husband and son. Doctors concluded that the elderly man's injuries were caused by being slapped, Hover said. He died the following day.
The victim's name has not been released. The suspect is expected to appear in court this afternoon for a bail hearing.
