Guv hires a new spokesman

J. Cory Curtis of Seattle, an executive with a New York-based public relations firm, has been hired as the new communications director for Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Curtis, 35, has spent the last couple years with Porter Novelli and handled accounts for the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Health and Human Services, according to a press release from the governor's office.

Before that, Curtis worked as director of marketing and development for the Lifelong AIDS Alliance in Seattle.

According to a 2007 press release issued by the alliance, Curtis' work in politics includes stints with the Human Rights Campaign in Washington, D.C. and former Seattle City Councilwoman Tina Podlodowski.

Curtis' appointment takes effect Dec. 16. He will succeed Pearse Edwards, who left in September to become a top advisor to North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue.
