Taxing sales of candy and marijuana are in the hopper

Posted at 8:58 am by Jerry Cornfield

Monday marked the first day state lawmakers could pre-file legislation they want to debate and hope to pass in the 2010 session.

House and Senate members didn't waste time as they put nearly 80 proposed new laws, constitutional amendments and joint resolutions in the mix for next year.

Atop the board on the House list is Democrat Rep. Jim Moeller's HB 2388 to make purchases of candy subject to a sales tax and spend that money on health care.

You'll also find HB 2401 to legalize and tax the sale of marijuana to adults. Seattle Democrat Mary Lou Dickerson is the prime sponsor. Among the other signers on this bill is Rep. Mary Helen Roberts, D-Lynnwood.

There are bills in response to the killing of four Lakewood police officers here, here and here.
