Locker dips toe in NFL pool
SEATTLE -- University of Washington junior quarterback Jake Locker has taken the first step toward the possibility of entering the 2010 NFL draft.
On Monday, Locker applied with the NFL's committee on early draft evaluation, hoping to get an estimate of where his stock lies as of now.
The application is a formality that UW head coach Steve Sarkisian called "natural" for junior prospects. Sarkisian went on to say that he is "very optimistic" about the possibility of Locker returning to school next year.
Sarkisian said he had no inside information regarding Locker's decision, only that he was looking at the "glass-half-full" approach as the Huskies' head coach.
"That's just the way I am," Sarkisian said during his end-of-the-year press conference Tuesday morning.
Sarkisian met with Locker on Monday to start researching the draft process. Both sides maintain that Locker has yet to make a decision on whether to apply for the draft or return for his senior season.
"Jake is a very heady young man, a patient young man," Sarkisian said Tuesday. "... He's going to do his due-diligence before making a decision."
After Saturday night's win over Cal, Locker said that he "honestly" has still yet to decide whether or not to come out early. He is a junior who is scheduled to graduate in the spring.
Several NFL scouting services rank Locker as the No. 1 quarterback prospect for the April draft, ahead of Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen.
Locker has until mid-January to decide whether to officially enter his name in the draft.
