Sacred music for the holidays

A number of churches are offering special Christmas concerts in celebration of the sacred aspects of the holiday. Here are some highlights of coming performances.

Sacred Music Chorale: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, the Chorale opens its 11th season as new artistic director Rachel Root conducts “Gloria in Excelsis Deo,” a Christmas choral celebration featuring the Evergreen Brass Quintet, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. Suggestion donation at the door is $10.

The Sacred Music Chorale was founded in 1999 by a group of six singers from University Presbyterian Church in Seattle to “sing the great music of the Christian Church.” The Chorale presents concerts twice yearly, before Christmas and in the early spring. The Chorale is artist-in-residence at Trinity Parish Church, Episcopal in Seattle. For more information visit www.SacredMusicChorale.org.

The Northwest Chorale: Directed by Lynn Hall, the choir will perform Handel’s “Messiah” in concert this holiday season at 3 p.m. Saturday at Edmonds United Methodist Church, 828 Caspers St., Edmonds. Admission is complimentary, and a free-will offering will be taken to benefit local area food banks. It will feature the solo talents of Kathy Barlow, soprano; Emily Lunde, alto; Paul Karaitis, tenor; and Michael Drumheller, bass. The orchestra for both performances will be the Starry Night Chamber Orchestra from the Mount Vernon area.

The Northwest Chorale presents choral masterworks of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn and other major composers, with Handel’s “Messiah” biannually as part of the group’s donation of all concert proceeds to Seattle area food banks. For additional information call 206-362-5731.

Sparkling Choir of Love: The gospel choir performs at at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, at the Lynnwood Free Methodist Church, 6519 188th St. SW, to benefit the Everett Gospel Mission. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door one hour before the show. For more information call 425-775-3696 or visit www.lynnwoodfmc.com.

Northwest Boychoir: 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, the choir celebrates its 31-year tradition with the presentation of its 2009 “A Festival of Lessons and Carols” concert series, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th St. SW, Lynnwood. Tickets are $22 adult, $17 senior, $12 student, available by calling 206-524-3234 or at www.nwchoirs.org.

Patterned after the Christmas Eve observance at King’s College in Cambridge, England, “A Festival of Lesson & Carols” consists of nine holiday readings, each followed by a traditional carol performed by the choir, and another carol sung by the choir and audience.

Soulful Sounds of Christmas XXI: 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, legendary gospel singer Pat Wright and The Total Experience Gospel Choir, along with soloist Nichol Venee’ Eskridge return to the campus theatre at Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Ave. N., Shoreline, after taking one year off. Tickets are $12 to $18, available by calling Nichol Eskridge at 360-224-7513.

This year marks 21 years of performing the spirit-filled, high energy concert at SCC. This is a community event that benefits the homeless and teen runaways.
