Holmgren hasn’t heard from Hawks

Former head coach says Cleveland job appealing, still waiting for word on Seattle’s opening

RENTON — Mike Holmgren said Friday that he’s trying to keep a low profile.

He said this while on 950 KJR for the weekly installment of “The NFL Show with Mike Holmgren.”

Yes, it’s time for the latest installment of the NFL soap opera starring Holmgren and the Seattle Seahawks.

While the Seahawks have remained mum on their search for a new president and general manager, Holmgren, the man who coached in Seattle for 10 seasons and has expressed interest in returning to football, perhaps in Seattle, is on a local radio station most Fridays, and this time around he was discussing the possibility of him taking a job in Cleveland.

While he did not say the Browns had offered him a job, Holmgren did say that “I had a pretty good feeling when I left... I just liked everything I heard. So I think I’d have a good chance, yes.”

And Holmgren seems to like what he heard while meeting with Browns owner Randy Lerner in Cleveland earlier in the week.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for anybody, it’s about as good a job situation as you could ask for in this business,” he said.

Asked what a job in Cleveland would entail, Holmgren said he got the impression that it would be up to him.

“It’s a pretty wonderful opportunity for anybody,” he said.

Holmgren also indicated that he liked the idea of working directly with Browns owner Randy Lerner with no layers between the two, and said that made the job “very, very appealing.”

As for a time table, Holmgren said no hard date was set, but that he’d like to make a decision “sooner than later” to be fair to the Browns.

Holmgren said other teams have contacted him, but would not say which teams. He also denied earlier reports that he has been told he is not a candidate for the Seahawks job.

“No, I have not been told that, but who knows,” he said. “I’m very sure that the organization wants to go through a process, that’s been made clear... No one has come to me or phoned me or said anything to me that I couldn’t be part of that process or wouldn’t be. That’s not to say that I will be part of the process, but no one has told me no.”

Curry expected to play

Linebacker Aaron Curry is listed as probable to play Sunday, just one week after he was carted off the field with a hip pointer. Curry practiced fully for the second straight day.

Linebacker D.D. Lewis, who has a knee injury, is questionable for the game, and receiver Nate Burleson (ankle) will not play.

Spencer to start at guard

Chris Spencer, previously the Seahawks starting center, will get the start at right guard. Mora said the plan is for Spencer to take the first quarter, and for Mike Gibson to play the second, though he said they will be flexible with that plan based on who is playing well and how the game is going.
