MARYSVILLE — The man killed by a suspected drunken driver Saturday has been identified as Joshua Haggerton, 26, of Arlington.
Haggerton was walking along the 10300 block of State Avenue around 2 a.m. when he was hit by a red 1996 Dodge Avenger.
A Washington State trooper driving the opposite direction clocked the sports coupe at more than 50 mph on the 35 mph road.
He was turning around to pull the driver over when investigators believe the Dodge struck Haggerton.
Haggerton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car was pulled over about two blocks away.
“What did I hit?” the driver asked.
There was damage to his windshield and the front of his car.
Police investigators said breath samples taken from Benjamin Dean Morgan, 34, showed he had a blood alcohol level of .17, more than twice the legal limit of .08, according to a police affidavit filed Monday in Everett District Court.
Morgan told police he’d been to a comedy club earlier in the night with his fiance, brother and other friends. He said he consumed four beers and two shots of vodka before driving his fiance home.
After that, he stopped for another beer and was headed to get something to eat at Jack in the Box when he was pulled over.
Morgan, who is a convicted felon, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide. A judge Monday set bail at $50,000.
This is the second vehicular homicide case involving drunken drivers in Snohomish County since Thanksgiving. Prosecutors say Matthew McDonald drank eight beers on Nov. 29 before he got behind the wheel. The crash killed four people along Highway 9.
