Firefighters distribute toys

CAMANO ISLAND — Community service doesn’t happen only in emergencies, said Levon Yengoyan, assistant chief with the Stanwood Camano Fire Department.

Members of the department recently took turns getting Santa Claus out to visit kids and collected donations to help families in need.

“We feel very strongly about our community and are always looking for ways to help serve our residents,” Yengoyan said. “This is a very special time of year and we hope we try to make it a little brighter for everyone.”

On the west side of Camano Island, firefighters put Santa on top of a decorated fire engine. He and his firefighter helpers cruised the neighborhoods handing out treats and small gifts to children, Yengoyan said.

“The response was overwhelming and we had a great time visiting with kids and their parents,” Capt. Mark Moses said. “Getting out into the community and seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces is the main reason we do this.”

The firefighters also started a new tradition this year with a toy drive sponsored by the Stanwood Camano Fire Department Honor Guard.

Generous contributions from the community helped the honor guard collected a lot of toys and other gifts, Yengoyan said.

More than 30 toy collection boxes were placed throughout the Stanwood-Camano Island area and most were filled, he said.

The toys will be distributed to local families and organizations through volunteers at Camano Chapel.
