Moore scores 19 as Cougars top Beavers
PULLMAN — Freshman Reggie Moore had a career-high 19 points as Washington State beat Oregon State 65-60 on Saturday.
Marcus Capers added 10 points and had 10 rebounds for the Cougars (11-3, 1-1 Pac-10), who overcame poor free-throw shooting (16 for 29) and foul trouble from leading scorer Klay Thompson.
Thompson, who leads the Pac-10 with 25.6 points per game, fouled out with just under five minutes to play after scoring seven points.
“Klay did not have his best game, but some of our other guys stepped up,” Washington State coach Ken Bone said. “They played (Klay) tough, you have to give credit to Oregon State’s defense.”
Moore, who came into the game averaging 12.9 points per game, hit 7 of 13 shots, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, but made only 2 of 7 free-throw attempts. He also had three steals.
Calvin Haynes had 17 points and Daniel Deane added 15 for Oregon State (6-7, 0-2), which was 15 for 15 from the free-throw line.
The Beavers, trailing 63-60 with 14 seconds left, had a chance to tie it but Haynes’ 3-point attempt was short. Oregon State was forced to foul, sending Washington State’s Xavier Thames to the line.
Thames made both free throws with 2 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
Oregon State settled for outside shots most of the night against Washington State’s zone defense and shot just 36 percent from the field. The Cougars shot 51 percent.
“I liked the way we competed, the way we pressured them (Oregon State) in the zone and then were able to push the ball,” Bone said. “I felt like we executed well in the zone and kept our composure.”
Washington State led by as many as 10 in the second half before the Beavers rallied. Oregon State came within 51-50, then tied it at 56 with 3:53 remaining on two free throws by Josh Tarver. With the scored still tied at 58, the Cougars got back-to-back layups from DeAngelo Casto and Thames to go ahead 62-58.
The Cougars held Oregon State’s leading scorer, Seth Tarver, to eight points, below his 12.9 average.
