Timeout with … Hailey Engstrom, senior, Meadowdale basketball

  • A first-year varsity team contributor, Hailey Engstrom is one of the most-liked players on the Meadowdale High School girls basketball team, according to Mavericks head coach Troy Parker. Engstrom, a 6-foot post, admits that she is a nice person and sometimes that works against her on the court when she needs to get physical and knocked foes around in the paint. Engstrom's primary sport is rowing. She competes for the Everett Rowing Association and already has several scholarship offers from some of the area's elite college rowing programs.

Remember the movie “Mean Girls”? Hailey Engstrom never would have cut it as a member of the ultra-cruel Plastics clique.

According to her coach, Engstrom is one of the most-liked players on the Meadowdale High School girls basketball team. The 6-foot post admits she is a nice person, but sometimes that works against her on the court, when she needs to be aggressive and fight for rebounds.

“I'm more of a gentle person,” said Engstrom. “You can even ask (Meadowdale coach Troy Parker). He'll tell you. He always wants me to get meaner.”

A first-year varsity team contributor in basketball, Engstrom's true calling is on the water. Her primary sport is rowing. She competes for the Everett Rowing Association and is mulling scholarship offers from the area's elite college rowing programs.

Coach's corner

She isn't one of the basketball team's statistical leaders, but Engstrom is an important part of Meadowdale's success. Engstrom plays consistently, is universally liked by teammates and is fully committed, coach Parker said.

Big transition

“I love it,” Engstrom said about getting to play on the Mavericks varsity squad this season. “The difference (from JV) is it's definitely more competitive (and) faster-paced. All the girls have been really encouraging.” The support of teammate Dana Horn, who is also a senior post and a close friend of Engstrom's, has been especially helpful, said Engstrom.

Row your boat

Although she didn't start rowing until after the 2008-2009 basketball season, Engstrom has enjoyed lots of success with the Everett Rowing Association. Traveling to other states and Canada, Engstrom has been a member of several first-place teams. She plans to compete in college and has recruiting interest from several programs, including the University of Washington, Washington State University and Oregon State University.

Surprisingly strenuous

The physical demands of rowing shocked Engstrom early on. “When I first started I didn't realize how (tough it is). In crew you use every part of your body: your legs, your arms, your back, everything. And so the first month I could barely walk up my stairs, I was so sore. It's just so intense,” she said.

What's up, doc?

Currently, Engstrom's favorite classes are human anatomy and physiology, and sports medicine. Engstrom wants to purse a career in medicine and possibly become a doctor.

Giving back

About a month ago Engstrom started volunteering for Everett's Cocoon House, a shelter for at-risk and homeless youth ages 13-17. She does fundraising and helps raise awareness of the shelter.

Mind-blowing movie

Seeing Avatar recently in the IMAX theater at Northgate Mall was incredible, said Engstrom: “The colors of the movie alone were amazing and just how it was shot in 3D.”
