Silvertips tie franchise mark
Everett extends its winning streak to 13 games with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Portland
EVERETT — The 2009-10 Everett Silvertips have etched their names into franchise history.
Zack Dailey scored twice, including the game-winner midway through the third period, and the Tips won their 13th consecutive game by defeating the Portland Winterhawks 4-3 Friday night.
The 13-game winning streak matches the franchise record set in 2006-07.
“It feels awesome,” said Dailey, who was a member of the 2006-07 team. “Any time you can be part of something special it’s a plus. I’m really proud of the guys, everyone’s been working really hard and the team’s been playing well.”
A raucous crowd at Comcast Arena watched the Tips come out on fire as they sought their piece of history, then held onto their seats for dear life as the Winterhawks went nuclear in the final 10 minutes pressing for the tying goal. But when Brad Ross’ final shot went high as the final horn sounded, the Tips mobbed goaltender Kent Simpson as the crowd went berserk.
“We didn’t want to think about (the streak) that much, but these past couple games we knew we were getting closer,” said Tips winger Shane Harper, another member of the 06-07 squad. “I think today was the hardest test so far, because it was that 13th game and was such a close game. I was a little nervous in the third, but we’re really excited we came through.”
Dailey finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Tips (32-16-2-1), who now lead Portland and Spokane by five points for second place in the U.S. division. Harper and Chris Langkow also scored for Everett, while Simpson finished with 27 saves. Simpson was particularly strong down the stretch as the Tips withstood Portland’s late onslaught.
Everett now can accomplish several things in tonight’s home game against Kamloops. A victory sets the franchise record for consecutive wins, gives the Tips a streak that matches Kootenay’s for the WHL’s longest this season and would leave the Tips perfect in January.
Friday’s victory over Portland continued Everett’s mastery of close games. Nine of the Tips’ victories during this winning streak have come by a single goal.
“We’ve been trying to be the go-getter instead of sitting back,” Harper explained about Everett’s success in the one-goal contests. “Even when it’s a close game, we don’t want to sit back, we want to keep going. I think that kind of shows in those one-goal games. You can’t sit back and wait for the other team, you have to keep attacking.”
Ty Rattie scored twice to lead Portland (30-20-1-1). Chris Francis added a goal and Mac Carruth stopped 38 shots in net for the Winterhawks.
Everett controlled the first two periods, outshooting Portland 31-14. However, Portland quickly answered both of Everett’s second-period goals as the Tips took a slender 3-2 advantage into the third.
The Winterhawks then tied it early in the third, Francis latching onto a rebound and wrapping around to the far post 3 minutes, 58 seconds in.
Portland had the initiative, but Ross’ high sticking penalty at 6:59 gave the Tips an opening, and Everett forced its way through. Radko Gudas shot from the right point, and Dailey was able to tip it under Carruth at 8:41 to give the Tips the lead.
Portland went hard trying to tie it again, but Simpson made several solid saves, and the Tips received a let-off when Nino Niederreiter’s shot hit the post.
“We kind of sat back on our heels,” Dailey said of the third period. “We weren’t getting in on the forecheck. They’re a great team and any time you give them time and space they’re going to make plays and come at you hard.”
Everett came out flying and took the lead 8:37 into the game. Ryan Murray’s backdoor pass found Harper all alone in the right slot, and Harper fired his shot past a lunging Carruth to give the Tips a 1-0 lead.
Both teams had open-net chances later in the period, with Francis firing wide and Everett’s Tyler Maxwell fanning as it remained 1-0 going into the second.
Everett then twice took two-goal leads in the second period, only for the Winterhawks to counter quickly. Langkow gave the Tips a 2-0 lead at 9:04 when he sniped a shot past Carruth in transition, but Rattie scored his first of the game 2:34 later when his shot from the slot bounced off a defender and looped over Simpson.
The Tips looked like they’d take a two-goal lead into the third when Dailey scored at 18:44, taking a backdoor feed from Harper and cutting in before shooting into the top corner. But Portland scored a vital goal with 11.6 seconds remaining, Luke Walker finding Rattie as the trailer on a three-on-two and Rattie making a move around Simpson to make it 3-2.
