PREP NOTEBOOK: Sharpshooting Haugstad has helped Stanwood build streak

Downtown Drew keeps lighting it up.

Drew Haugstad, a senior on the surging Stanwood High School boys basketball team, has been on a remarkable long-range shooting binge for four weeks.

How good has Haugstad been? In Stanwood’s past seven games — all Spartans’ victories, during what has ballooned into a nine-game winning streak — the 5-foot-11 guard has made 36 3-point baskets.

That’s an average of five 3s per game, going back to Jan. 13 when Haugstad drained a career high seven 3-pointers in a blowout win at Cascade. Since then, he has hit at least four shots from beyond the arc every game.

“This run he’s on is just crazy,” third-year Stanwood head coach Zach Ward said.

Haugstad’s shooting has helped Stanwood (12-2 Western Conference North Division, 12-6 overall) overcome a slow start to the season (the Spartans began 3-6) and contend for a league title. With two North games to go, Stanwood is a half-game behind Lake Stevens (13-2 North) for first place.

Stanwood, which already clinched a Class 4A District 1 tournament berth, plays at Snohomish (10-4) tonight and plays host to Cascade (10-4) on Thursday.

Haugstad’s dramatic emergence has complemented the play of well-known Stanwood standouts Zack Johnson and Kale Schmidt, both seniors.

“It was just confidence and knowing that he could do it in the game,” coach Ward said of Haugstad, who is 54-for-119 (45.4 percent) on 3s this season.

Haugstad put in tons of time in the offseason, shooting for several hours at least three nights a week at the end of the summer and through the fall, said Ward.

“Him and the play of (Austin Cook) at the point is definitely the difference, compared to where we were earlier in the year,” Ward said.

Brandsma to be inducted into athletic director Hall of Fame

Karst Brandsma, a former local school administrator, will be inducted into the Washington Secondary School Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame on April 19 in Spokane. Brandsma worked for Everett Public Schools from 2001-2009, most recently as interim superintendent. He retired from public education after 32 years but is currently acting deputy superintendent for Bellingham Public Schools. Once head football coach and athletic director at Peninsula High in Gig Harbor, Brandsma later served as Tacoma Public Schools’ district athletic director, managing events like the state track and field meet and the state basketball championships.

Stanwood pitcher Brittany Jeans verbally committed to the James Madison University softball program and plans to sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent in April.
