Harper gets goal No. 39 in Tips win
Shane Harper breaks franchise record for goals in a season in 5-2 win over Kamloops
KAMLOOPS, B.C. Shane Harper cemented his position as the greatest goal scorer in Everett Silvertips history Tuesday night.
And the Silvertips managed to keep pace in the race for the U.S. Division title.
Harper set a new Everett standard for single-season goals, scoring his 39th of the season, and the Tips defeated the Kamloops Blazers 5-2.
Harper bested the record of 38 set by John Lammers during the 2005-06 season. Harper is also the Everett leader in career goals with 97, surpassing Zach Hamills previous mark earlier in the season.
The Tips also stayed in touch with first place in the division. Tri-City won 5-1 at Portland on Tuesday, meaning the Tips remained four points behind the first-place Americans.
Clayton Cumiskey, Zack Dailey, Dan Iwanski and Scott MacDonald also scored for Everett (42-19-3-2), which has earned points in nine straight games, winning seven of those. Thomas Heemskerk earned the win in goal with 38 saves.
Mark Hall and Austin Madaisky scored for Kamloops (30-32-2-4). Jon Groenheyde made 24 saves in goal for the Blazers.
The score was tied 1-1 through one period, with the Blazers outshooting the Tips 12-4. But Everett broke the game open in the second.
The Tips took the lead 8 minutes, 25 seconds into the period. Scott MacDonald dropped a pass for Cumiskey, who picked out the corner to give Everett a 2-1 lead.
Everett put the puck in the net shortly after, but had it waived off because Groenheydes mask came off. But the Tips did take a two-goal lead at 14:32, Dailey making a nice move around Groenheyde after a feed from Harper in transition.
The Tips capped off the period by scoring again with 1:21 remaining. Radko Gudas shot from the point, and Iwanski tipped it past Groenheyde to make it 4-1.
Kamloops gave itself a feint hope by scoring on the power play 8:27 into the third period, Madaisky redirecting a pass under Heemskerk to cut the lead to two.
But the Tips killed it off with 48 seconds remaining on MacDonalds empty netter.
Everett opened the scoring and Harper set the record on the power play 12:04 into the game. Harper received the puck down low and banked a shot in off the back of Groenheyde for his 39th goal of the season, making it 1-0.
Kamloops tied it just as a power play expired at 17:16 when Hall was able to tip J.C. Lipons shot from the point past Heemskerk to make it 1-1.
