Military drills for potential security breaches

Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield will test how bases nationwide respond to a theoretical threat

EVERETT — People who live or work near Naval Station Everett might notice some commotion at the base next week.

Officials plan a routine security exercise involving simulated gunfire and the use of the base’s giant-voice system — a loud outdoor intercom that may blast out instructions to people on base.

The base also will close its gates March 24 as early as 8 a.m. as part of the exercise, said Naval Station Everett spokeswoman Kristin Ching. Nobody will be allowed in or out for the morning and people who work or live on base should plan accordingly, she said.

There also may be more traffic and security measures the entire week.

The exercise is called Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield and it’s part of a nationwide effort to get bases ready for any security breaches. The particular scenario next week involves a shooter who has penetrated the base’s defensives.

This security exercise is not in response to any specific threat, Ching said.

Other area bases are also taking part, including Naval Base Kitsap and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
