PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Woeck’s home run beats Jackson, 1-0

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — None of the members of the Mountlake Terrace baseball team could reach base against Jackson starting pitcher Cody Schmale Friday — except Andrew Woeck.

While Schmale mowed down the rest of his teammates, Woeck batted 2-for-2 with a walk and clubbed a fifth-inning shot over the fence for the game’s only run in Terrace’s 1-0 home victory.

The big hit wasn’t a surprise to Hawks’ coach Andrew Watters, who is used to his captain and three-year varsity player coming up with big hits. Nor was Watters surprised that Aaron Brooks came up big on the mound for the home side, tossing a complete-game shutout and allowing just four hits on the night.

“Aaron Brooks was outstanding today,” Watters said.

Brooks (4-1) struck out 13 Timberwolves on the way to his second straight Friday 1-0 victory, having already shut down Edmonds-Woodway a week ago. Brooks’ fastball was up to speed and he was locating his pitches well, but the change up is what got the Jackson batters to swing and miss, Watters said.

“I think that’s why he got the big strikeout numbers,” Watters said. “He’s changed speed really well.”

Jackson’s Sam Brown was the only batter to get a hold of any Watters offering, recording a double.

The victory means Terrace (8-3 Wesco South) is now tied with Kamiak (8-3) atop the league standings and keeps the Hawks on a roll, having won four straight. With the loss, Jackson (7-4) drops out of the three-way, first-place tie.

“All of the wins are huge for us right now,” Watters said. “We are in great position.”

Glacier Peak 3, Lynnwood 2: At Snohomish, Lance Foster hit a game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and hand the Wesco South win to Glacier Peak. Dane Larsen batted 2-for-3 with two doubles and Dylan Caneza (2-for-3) had a double and a run scored. Lynnwood was led by Elliot Klen (2-for-3), who had an RBI, and Mike Stanley, who hit a double and scored a run.

Kamiak 5, Shorecrest 4: At Shoreline, Chris Guinn of Kamiak went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI and the Knights took advantage of a Shorecrest error to score in the top of the seventh and pull out a win in the Wesco South game. With the win, Kamiak remained tied atop the conference standings with Mountlake Terrace. Matt Kiga batted 3-for-4 with two RBI to keep Shorecrest close.

Shorewood 5, Mariner 2: At Everett, Robbie Rusch broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put Shorewood up for good in the Wesco South game. The home run overshadowed a strong pitching performance by Jason Rosendahl, who pitched 61/3 innings and gave up five hits and only two earned runs. Connor McKeevee added a solo home run for the Thunderbirds.
