PREP SOCCER/GOLF ROUNDUP: Snohomish notches 3-2 shootout win over Stanwood

STANWOOD — The Snohomish boys soccer team headed into Stanwood shorthanded Thursday night without one of its senior captains, who received a red card in the Panther's previous game, and its starting goalie, who sprained an ankle a week ago.

The Panthers headed out of Stanwood with a huge 3-2 Wesco North victory decided when fill-in freshman goalie Collin Shelton saved the Spartans' final penalty kick attempt. Snohomish missed just one penalty kick on the way to a 4-3 edge.

Brendon Gundry made a huge run 18 seconds into the game taking a pass from Carson Pingrey to get Snohomish (8-3-1 league and overall) on the board early but Mickey Brown answered quickly with an unassisted goal for the Spartans (6-4-2) in the second minute.

Conner Barton's unassisted goal gave Snohomish a 2-1 edge in the 67th minute but James Postma's free kick goal in the 77th minute sent the game into overtime. Stanwood's Dalton Alumbaugh played the entire game in goal.

Everett 2, Cascade 1: At Everett, Everett scored two second-half goals to grab a Wesco North win. Taylor Suarez (Eric Ofori assist) scored the game-tying goal in the 65th minute and Ofori followed in the 72nd minute with the game-winner for the Seagulls (3-7-1 league, 3-8-1 overall) off a Chaz Jenkins assist. Stephen Van scored for Cascade (3-9-0, 3-9-0) in the 15th minute. Cory Evans and Brian Janner both played goalkeeper for the Bruins. Tanner Jelinek earned the win in goal for Everett.

Monroe 4, Arlington 0: At Monroe, Andrew Barrett netted two goals as the Bearcats (5-4-2 league and overall) kept in the 4A District 1 playoff hunt with the convincing Wesco North win. Chris Sowler set up Barrett in the eighth minute to open the scoring. Edmond Fischer converted the second scoring chance in the 11th minute thanks to Jorge Avila, who scored the final goal of the game on a Quinn Coan assist in the 54th minute. Barrett's second goal came at the expense of Corbin Anderson in goal for the Eagles (7-5-0) and was assisted by Mitch Balk in the 17th minute. Jose Perez Jr recorded the clean sheet for Monroe while Cory Ferris minded the net in the second half for Arlington.

Cedarcrest 5, Granite Falls 1: At Granite Falls, led by Nik Porchia's two goals and Ben Toler's three assists, Cedarcrest earned a Cascade Conference win. After the Red Wolves fell behind early 1-0 due to a Maika Macalomani goal in the 15th minute for Granite Falls, Porchia answered with a goal in the 20th minute to tie it and then in the 31st (Shawn Klopp assist) to put Cedarcrest ahead 3-1. Klopp had made it 2-1 just prior to that on a Ben Toler assist in the 28th minute. The Red Wolves tacked on two more goals, one from C.J. Mawry in the 40th minute (Tyler Rodger assist) and another by Zach Wilhelm in the 44th minute (Tolar assist).

King's 6, South Whidbey 0: At Langley, Forwards Evan Sabo and Trevor Bartels each scored twice for King's in the Cascade Conference game. Jake Hibbard opened up the scoring for the Knights in the fifth minute on a Drew Corwin assist. He was immediately followed by Bartels, who found the back of the net twice in consecutive minutes (eighth and ninth) both on feeds from Jacob Hauser to make it 3-0. Sabo then closed out the half with two goals in the 32nd and 36th minutes, respectively (Gunnar Ildhuso and Bartels assists). Joseph Geong added the last goal in the 42nd minute on a Hauser assist. First-place King's improved to 9-2 with the win. South Whidbey is 6-5, 6-6.

Coupeville 1, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Coupeville's Spencer Tack collected a long pass and had enough poise on the ball to beat the goalkeeper one-on-one in the 48th minute to give the Wolves a Cascade Conference win. Isaac Wacker earned the shutout in goal for Coupeville (6-5 league, 7-6 overall). Clayton Knoles took the loss in goal for Sultan (3-8, 3-10) as both goalkeepers made a couple tremendous saves in the match, according to Sultan coach Mark Raney.

Archbishop Murphy 1, Lakewood 0 (shootout): At Marysville, Archbishop Murphy converted three penalty kicks in a Cascade Conference shootout win. Doug Ehlebracht earned the shutout in goal for the Wildcats (8-3 league, 8-4 overall). Sam Johnston was the hard-luck loser in goal for Lakewood (5-6, 5-8).
