When your son wins the Kentucky Derby, the paparazzi won’t leave you alone. Supercharger, the 15-year-old dam of Super Saver, has done a lot of posing lately at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.
“She’s worn out from all the pictures,” said Kieran Lalor, who supervises WinStar’s 115 broodmares. Otherwise, the life of the four-legged mother of the year hasn’t changed. There haven’t even been any extra treats.
“She gets mints every day, regardless, but you don’t want to change their routine,” Lalor said. “Just mints, green grass and lots of love.”
Love? She didn’t even get a flower from the garland of roses. “A lot of our people who went to the Derby got one,” Lalor said, “and some others, too, but not her.”
What kind of thanks is that for bringing a Derby winner into the world?
It’s been a crazy month for the daughter of A.P. Indy, the 1992 Horse of the Year. On April 11, she produced her seventh foal, a colt. Ten days later, she was bred to two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow, and she’s pregnant again. Ten days after that was the Derby, which she didn’t even get to watch on TV. What’s a mother to do?
Her world-famous child is only 67 miles away in Louisville, preparing for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. But do you think he’ll drop by Sunday to take Supercharger out for a Mother’s Day brunch? Not a chance. Well, what can you expect from a 3-year-old boy?
