Women playwrights to gather on Whidbey
Twelve years ago, in 1998, women playwrights began arriving at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts to share what they had written. Today, they still make the trek.
The Women Playwrights Festival continues on Sunday. The women presenters have been selected by Whidbey Island Center for the Arts and Hedgebrook, Whidbey Islands womens writers retreat.
The presenting playwrights this year are:
Danai Gurira, author of Eclipsed, based on the stories from Liberian women during civil war;
Sherry Kramer, author of What a Man Weighs and The Wall of Water;
Lenelle Moïse, a Haitian-American and Smith College graduate who performs nationally on topics of identity, immigration, spirituality and race;
Sarah Treem, author of A Feminine Ending and producer on the HBO drama In Treatment.
The Women Playwrights Festival starts at 4 p.m. Sunday at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, 565 Camano Ave., Langley. All seats are $5. Call 360-221-8268 or go to www.wicaonline.com.
