Five students earn Eagle Scout honors

Ian DuPape, Talan Gunnell, Mark Lavering, Ryan Lavering and Peter Melton were recently honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on April 30. All five Eagle Scouts are members of Troop 183, sponsored by the Lake Stevens Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

DuPape is a senior at Lake Stevens High School and is also attending Everett Community College through the Running Start program. For his Eagle project, he installed an Internet, computer and phone network at Ensign Ranch in Cle Elem. The majority of the work was done in two Saturdays with a couple of follow-up visits to complete the project.

Gunnell’s Eagle Scout project was to repair and replace weathered and graffiti-scarred park benches and tables at Howarth Park for the Everett City Parks department. The task involved about 30 people and 120 hours of work.

Mark Lavering is an eighth grader at Cavelero Mid High in Lake Stevens. His Eagle Project involved designing, mapping and building a nine-hole disk golf course at Cascade Park in Arlington. Many hours were donated by volunteers as they cut and built the targets and signs for each disk golf hole, dug and set the posts in concrete, labeled each hole and gave directions to the next hole.

Ryan Lavering is a junior at Lake Stevens High School. His Eagle project involved designing and building a footbridge over a pond at Catherine Creek Park in Lake Stevens. Project volunteers also helped haul gravel into the park, refilled disc golf tee boxes and removed litter from the park.

Melton is a high school senior at Lake Stevens High School who will graduate in June from the Everett Community College Ocean Research College Academy with an associates degree. His Eagle project was to organize and manage a group of volunteers who cleared and re-established over 1,000 feet of overgrown hiking trail for the Everett Parks Department at Forest Park. About 100 volunteers removed several trash bin loads of overgrown vegetation, brush, and debris on May 15 from Bicentennial Park in Mountlake Terrace during the city’s annual Volunteer Park Clean Up event.

In addition, the park’s fences, benches and gazebo were given a fresh coat of paint to help spruce up the five-acre park.
