Boys & Girls club offers free activities

Lack of transportation and conflicts with work schedules have prevented some low-income north Everett families from participating in kickoff events for Get Movin’.

The closest kickoff event on June 6 is at Everett Mall, about seven miles away.

This year, the Boys & Girls Club in north Everett is launching a program that will provide an easier way for families to sign up, as well as free events for school-aged kids to participate in all summer long.

The goal is to get kids and their families motivated to get active over the summer, said Jeremy Oshie, a director at the 12th Street Boys & Girls Club.

“It’s not always about access to a gym or a baseball field,” he said. “They can do different things on their own at a local park or trails around the city of Everett to be active and get physically fit.”

The Boys & Girls Club will offer activities Monday through Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. for any child signed up for Get Movin.’ The summer program encourages kids to be active for 30 minutes five times a week. Those who can meet the goal qualify for prizes, such as passes for swimming, climbing and bowling.

The daily activities being offered at the Boys & Girls Club include kickball, volleyball and perhaps karate and gymnastics, Oshie said. The one-hour sessions will begin on June 26 and continue through Sept. 3.

Parents can sign up their children for Get Movin’ at the Boys & Girls Club between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. June 7-18.

In addition, kids signed up for Get Movin’ get a free summertime membership at the north Everett Boys & Girls Club.

The 12th Street Boys & Girls Club is the only club in Snohomish County offering the summer of free activities for kids signed up for Get Movin’.

If kids respond, “then I’ll pitch it to other Boys & Girls Clubs,” Oshie said.

The organization has been a supporter of Get Movin’ for several years. The north Everett club is surrounded by public housing. The neighborhood has a lot of low income and immigrant families, he said, some of whom are not fluent in English.

“It’s a demographically diverse community,” Oshie said.

“We thought if we could provide something closer to home, it would be easier for them to become involved. “We want to give them something safe and positive and fun to do this summer.”
