Filings launch election season
Candidates can file this week to be on the ballot for the Aug. 17 primary.
Election season opened Monday with incumbents, newcomers and a few perennial hopefuls signing up to run for office this year.
U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., who is seeking a fourth term, was one of the first to file her paperwork to secure a spot on the ballot for the Aug. 17 primary.
By the end of the day, she had four opponents including a perpetual office-seeker, Goodspaceguy of Seattle. Republicans Paul Akers, Clint Didier and Dino Rossi did not turn in candidacy papers Monday.
U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., filed for re-election Monday as did challenger David Schirle of the Independent Party. At least two Republicans are expected in the race too.
Bellingham Democrat Larry Kalb signed up to take on U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash. Neither Larsen nor Republican hopeful John Koster turned in paperwork Monday.
Monday brought a mild surprise in the 10th Legislative District when Democrat Tom Riggs of Camano Island entered the race against Rep. Barbara Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. Until Monday, no one had announced plans to try to unseat Bailey, who had not filed as of Monday.
