Larsen blasts Palin's backing of Koster

Democratic Congressman Rick Larsen today criticized former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her endorsement of his Republican opponent, John Koster.

“While this may be the clearest evidence yet of John Koster's true priorities, the last thing Northwest Washington needs right now are politicians from out-of-state using this race to further their national ambitions,” Larsen said in a press released issued by his campaign this afternoon.

On Saturday, Palin, the 2008 vice presidential nominee, endorsed Koster against the five-term Larsen in the 2nd Congressional District. The district stretches from Everett north to the Canadian border. Larsen defeated Koster for the seat in 2000.

"Just as Governor Palin has done in Alaska, I will go to Washington, DC and stand firm against wasteful spending, higher taxes, and the special interest groups that are destroying our economy and our children's futures," Koster said in a statement issued Saturday..

According to Larsen's press release: "'Palin has asked her most radical supporters to "target" Democrats across America. She even uses crosshairs in her literature, upping the rhetoric and literally taking aim."

Larsen said, “She can target me and put Northwest Washington in her crosshairs, but it won't stop me from fighting for what I believe is right."

He also states:

A Palin endorsement means John Koster is opening his campaign war chest to a potential landslide of out-of-state contributions; contributions that will fund his campaign to eliminate the help seniors are getting to pay for prescription drugs, privatize Social Security, and protect the lax regulations that led to the BP oil spill.

Larsen leads Koster in the race for funds at this point.

He had raised $736,671 as of March 31, according to reports filed with the Federal Elections Commission. Nnearly 65 percent of that amount came from political action committees, the majority of which list their headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Speaking of oil, those records show Larsen received $1,000 from BP Amoco Corporation PAC on Dec. 25, 2009 and $3,000 from Tesoro Petroleum in the last two years.

Koster, by comparison, had raised $168, 717 as of March 31. Of the sum, 97 percent came from individuals, according to the FEC. He received a total of $4,500 from four PACs, none associated with the oil industry.
