SILVERTIPS NOTEBOOK: Silvertips find a forward overlooked by rest of WHL
EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips believe they’ve found a player who slipped through the cracks.
The Tips signed forward Cody Fowlie to a Western Hockey League education contract, the team announced Tuesday, receiving a commitment from a player who has the appearance of a late bloomer.
Fowlie, who has a late 1992 birthdate, was passed over in the bantam draft and wasn’t listed by any WHL team until last winter, when he was playing midget hockey as a 17-year-old. But the Tips believe Fowlie’s ready to step into the lineup in the upcoming 2010-11 season.
“We didn’t sign him to be a role player,” Everett general manager Doug Soetaert, who’s attending league meetings in Calgary, said via cell phone. “We expect that once he adjusts to the league, he’ll be a solid contributor for us.”
Fowlie, a 6-foot, 175-pound native of Airdrie, Alberta, played last season for the UFA Bisons of the Alberta Midget League. He finished tied for seventh in the league in scoring with 45 points (16 goals, 29 assists) in 35 games and was named a South Division first-team all-star.
“He’s a young guy who skates extremely well,” Soetaert said. “He has a great work ethic, competes hard and is strong on the puck. We’re excited to add him to the lineup.”
Murray short-listed by Hockey Canada
Everett defenseman Ryan Murray was among the 38 skaters invited to Canada’s selection camp for the U-18 Ivan Hlinka Tournament.
Murray, Everett’s rookie phenom who doesn’t turn 17 until September, was one of 14 defensemen invited to the camp, which takes place July 31-Aug. 3 in Calgary. The tournament, which serves as the U-18 World Cup, is Aug. 10-14 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Murray has already represented Canada at the U-18 level, playing at the U-18 World Championships in April. Murray was the only 1993-born player on that team, with the rest born in 1992. Players born in 1992 are no longer eligible at the U-18 level.
