2 seriously injured in fiery wreck on U.S. 2 near Snohomish
Both directions of highway now open
SNOHOMISH — Two seriously injured men were raced to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle this afternoon after a fiery four-vehicle wreck on U.S. 2.
The crash happened shortly before noon when an eastbound Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle apparently crossed the center line, Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said.
U.S. 2 was reopened to traffic about 5 p.m., after forcing detours in both directions for about five hours.
The Durango's driver, 65, of Startup, was airlifted to Harborview with serious injuries. A semi-truck driver, 33 of Kent, also was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. He suffered burns.
The cross-over crash is in a notoriously dangerous stretch of the highway. Since 1999, 54 people have died on U.S. 2 between Snohomish and Stevens Pass
The Durango was eastbound on U.S. 2 between Bickford Avenue and Highway 9 when it apparently crossed the center line and hit the side of a westbound pickup that was pulling a horse trailer, Leary said.
The Durango then hit a Chevy Colorado pickup before smashing into the semi-truck. The crash touched off a fire that left the semi's cab burnt beyond recognition.
The other drivers, passengers and horses involved in the wreck were not injured, Leary said.
The crash scene at 2 p.m. continued to block the highway as investigators gathered evidence.
Traffic jammed area streets.
