Ron Paul endorses Clint Didier for Senate
Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who made a spirited run for president in 2008, endorsed Republican Clint Didier of Eltopia for the U.S. Senate on Friday.
Didier is “a dynamic leader” who understands the federal Constitution and has “the courage to stand up against the bailouts and government takeovers being forced down our throats by Washington insiders,” Paul said in a prepared statement.
For Didier, it is the second big name in national politics to endorse his bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-WA. Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential nominee, tweeted her support for him in May.
It is also the first national figure of note to sign on with his campaign since Republican Dino Rossi entered the race. Coincidentally, Lew Moore of Everett, the man who managed Paul’s 2008 presidential campaign, is an adviser to Rossi.
Didier, in a prepared statement, jabbed Rossi with the endorsement that he called “a monumental honor.”
“I thank (Paul) for recognizing that someone like me — NOT the establishment party’s insider — will have the courage and grit to stand up to government bailouts, sweetheart deals and the temptation of pork-barrel politics,” Didier said.
Rossi campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Morris said of the news: “This race is going to be decided by Washingtonians, not out of state endorsements.”
Didier and Paul met June 16 in Washington, D.C.
He was very impressive, said Jesse Benton, director of Paul’s Liberty PAC. Benton said the political action committee will be making a contribution to the Didier campaign.
Rossi is not without friends among leading Republicans in Congress. Last month, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the vice chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander were among the hosts of a fundraising event for him.
And Rossi got a thumbs-up — though not quite an endorsement — from nationally known writer and political humorist Ben Stein on Thursday.
“Ran into Ben Stein at Spokane airport. He donated. I won Ben Stein’s money! Anyone else? Anyone? Anyone?” Rossi tweeted.
