Kimberly-Clark profit rises on 'jeans' diaper

Kimberly-Clark Corp., the maker of Kleenex tissues and Huggies diapers, said Friday that higher selling prices and cost cuts helped its second-quarter net income rise 24 percent. The company said positive reception to new products, such as Huggies diapers that look like jeans, helped personal-care revenue, which rose 3 percent to $2.18 billion. But tissue revenue was weaker, down 2 percent to $1.53 billion. Revenue rose 3 percent to $4.86 billion, but fell short of expectations. The company lowered its revenue guidance for the year.

Alaska Airlines tests 'greener' landing

Alaska Airlines says it's flown another test flight with a 737 jet of landing procedures at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that can save fuel, reduce noise and cut emissions by a third. The procedures, already used in Alaska and at several Lower 48 airports, use satellite technology to guide a plane to a landing, making for a shorter and slower approach. The airline is working with Boeing and other airlines to get Federal Aviation Administration approval to use the techniques at Sea-Tac. If so, Alaska Airlines estimates that more than 2 million gallons of fuel could be saved each year.

Ford posts another strong quarterly profit

Ford Motor Co. posted a strong second-quarter profit Friday but trimmed its U.S. sales forecast and predicted weaker results in the second half as the economy slowly recovers. The automaker surprised Wall Street, making $2.6 billion in the quarter as it continued to grab sales from rivals. Ford's U.S. sales rose 28 percent in the first six months of this year. That's almost double the pace of industrywide sales. It was Ford's fifth straight quarterly profit, and the No. 2 U.S. automaker predicted a strong 2010 and even better 2011.

Apple delays white iPhone to later in year

Apple says the white version of the iPhone 4 will not be available until later this year. Apple had originally said the phones would be available in late July. Apple Inc. says the white gadgets have been more difficult to manufacture than expected. The Cupertino, Calif., company says the black models, which went on sale in late June, are not affected.

Verizon posts 2Q loss because of buyouts

Verizon Communications Inc. on Friday said it lost $198 million in the second quarter due to a buyout for 11,000 workers. Excluding the severance costs and other items, earnings beat Wall Street expectations while revenue was slightly lower than analysts had expected. The nation's second biggest phone company said it lost the equivalent of 7 cents per share in the April to June period. That compares with net income of $1.48 billion, or 52 cents per share, in the same period last year.
