PICK OF THE WEEK: Marine Area 7 crabbing
This has generally been a pretty good recreational crabbing season so far in north Sound, but the best results, as usual, have been in the southern and eastern portions of the San Juan Islands, including Padilla and Samish bays. The flats off Saddlebag Island, lying in the group of small islands southeast of Guemes and just northeast of Anacortes, form one of the more popular and productive spots now open, and crabbing there has been good.
Anthon Steen at Holiday Sports in Burlington (360-757-4361) called the crabbing in that part of Padilla Bay "hot," and reported that two tackle shop employees dropped their pots there for a couple of hours recently, ending up with about 10 keepers per pot, some over 7 inches.
Marine Area 7 South opened July 14, Wednesdays through Saturdays only and the entire Labor Day weekend, and will close the evening of Sept. 6 for a catch assessment. It may reopen in the fall of there is quota remaining.
