Meet the candidates: 38th District representative, Position 2
The job
At stake is a two-year term as a representative in the state Legislature. This seat is for the 38th Legislative District that covers parts of Snohomish County including Everett, Marysville and the part of the Snohomish Valley west of Highway 9. The annual salary is $42,106.
Election Day: Nov. 2, with ballots scheduled to be mailed out Oct. 15.
Iris Lilly
Age: 48
Occupation: Training specialist with Service Alternatives, a company that works with people with developmental disabilities
Residence: Marysville

Education: A 1980 graduate of Cascade High School. Earned a bachelor's degree in political science i n 2005 from Western Washington University.
In her own words: "I have a unique perspective since I've lived in foreign countries. I appreciate our Constitution and our liberties and I'm vocal about it."
Lilly's priorities:
• Wants to change the way the state spends its money, particularly when it comes to human services. Her experiences working in the industry as well as raising a son with Asperger's syndrome inform her views.
• Says the state's education system is failing miserably. Supports parents having the option to use tax dollars to home school or place their children in private schools.
• Supports reducing business taxes so small business owners can hire more employees.
Notable: Lilly and her family created a bowling league in Marysville for people with developmental disabilities. She spent some of her childhood living abroad, including Germany and Iran.
Mike Sells
Age: 65
Occupation: Incumbent state representative and secretary-treasurer of the Snohomish County Labor Council
Residence: Everett

Education: Kent-Meridian High School, 1963. Earned a bachelor's degree in education in1967 from Central Washington University and a teacher's certificate in 1971 from the University of Washington.
In his own words: "I try to work across the aisles with any variety of people and find that common ground to move forward agendas."
Sell's priorities:
• Wants to do whatever is possible to minimize "negative budget impacts." Suggests scrutinizing each budget item that comes up for action. Supports performance audits on budgets and said it makes sense right now to steer clear of legislation that promises money.
• Supports education but is concerned about how the education reform the Legislature passed will be funded. The state may need to scale back some ideas since "the money just isn't there." He doesn't want the reforms to become an unfunded mandate for schools.
• Said there are creative ways to help small, local businesses flourish. As an example, he pointed to a tax exemption he placed into a House finance package that helped the company Seacast in Marysville avoid paying what amounted to double taxes.
Notable: Worked as a elementary and middle school teacher and served as president of the Everett Education Association for 18 years. Enjoys collecting unusual license plates.
