Training camp Day 1: morning practice notes

Is it a bad sign that I'm having a hard time typing this because my fingers are cold from being outside. . . in July? I say yes, though the players probably don't mind a nice cool start to training camp.
Anyway, the first practice featured shoulder pads, which is a bit unusual for Day 1 of training camp, and that led to some harder-than-normal hitting, much to the delight of the fans in attendance. Players also seemed to enjoy it, and noted that it was definitely a more physical practice than they they're used to on the first day of training camp.
As was the case late in the offseason workouts, Red Bryant, not Lawrence Jackson, was playing DE with the first-team defense. Leroy Hill continues to be relegated mostly to second-team duties while David Hawthorne gets the bulk of the reps with the No. 1 defense. And it was Hawthorne that provided one of the morning's defensive highlights, breaking through the line and to great RB Quinton Ganther.
Offensively, Golden Tate turned in one of the best plays of the day, making a leaping catch over Marcus Trufant on a pass down the sideline.
A few personnel notes in addition to Sean Morey's retirement, which was mentioned in the last post. Guard Chester Pitts, who is coming off of microfracture surgery, fullback Owen Schmitt (elbow) and CB Josh Pinkard (knee) all open the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Still no work on first-round picks Russell Okung and Earl Thomas, who were not at practice since they haven't signed. With Okung out, Ray Willis was the first-team left tackle, and Jordan Babineaux worked with the No. 1 defense in Thomas' absence.
The fact that the Browns agreed to terms with Joe Haden, the No. 7 overall pick, should speed up the process of getting Okung signed, because now parameters on both sides of Okung, the No. 6 pick, have been set.
