Enroll: Program offered for jobless

Out of work YouthBuild Snohomish County just might give you the help you need.

Two information sessions are offered today about the 10-month construction training program for youth.

The program offers paid work, a free opportunity to earn a GED certificate, training in community leadership, personal support and advocacy, as well as help finding a job after graduation.

To qualify, participants must be 18 to 24, unemployed and low-income ($10,830 a year for a family of one), without a GED certificate or diploma and interested in learning construction skills and helping their community.

The program, funded by grant money, is hosted by Workforce Development Council Snohomish County, Center for Career Alternatives, Housing Hope and local community colleges.

Attending an information session is required to enroll. Today's sessions are offered at 3 p.m. at the Stillaguamish Tribal Center, 3310 Smokey Point, Arlington; and at 6:30 p.m. at The Station, 8713 271st St. NW, Stanwood.

Run: 5k/10k planned for charity

Community members are invited to participate in the River & Rail Run, a 5k/10K race planned for Saturday to help support at-risk kids.

Now in its fifth year, the annual event raises money for Cocoon House, a Snohomish County-based organization that serves homeless and struggling young people.

The run starts at 9 a.m. at Haller Park, 1100 West Ave., Arlington.

Registration is from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

The cost is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Kids younger than 14 participate for free with a registered adult.

The race is free for people older than 70, and T-shirts are $5.

Learn: Fun facts about chocolate

Bring your school-age kids to Snohomish Library, at 311 Maple Ave., Aug. 12 to learn fun facts about chocolate, play games and have a tasting.

The free program starts at 11 a.m.

Bring your favorite chocolate recipe to share.

Exercise: Fun run planned for kids

The Mill Creek Parks and Recreation Department on Aug. 14 is hosting the Kids Fun Run, a run and walk for kids at the Heatherwood Middle School Track and Field, 1419 Trillium Blvd. SE.

Children ages kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to participate in a 0.5 mile run/walk at 10 a.m. or a 2K run/walk at 10:45 a.m. Check-in is at 9:00 a.m.

Registered participants will get a goodie bag. Submit registration by today to get a free T-shirt.

Parents and guardians are required to sign a waiver and are encouraged to stay and cheer their kids.

Registration is $10, with half going to the American Red Cross Relief effort to help children in Haiti.
