TORONTO — Andy Murray defeated top-ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-3, 6-4 Saturday in the first semifinal of the Rogers Cup on Saturday.
Murray play the winner of the Roger Federer in today’s final.
Murray used his strong baseline game to knock off the top-seed. He kept the pressure on Nadal throughout the match and kept the unforced errors to a minimum. Murray earned a break to go up 5-4 in the second set before serving out for the win.
He improved to 4-8 against Nadal, with all four victories coming on hard courts.
Murray is looking to become the first men’s player to repeat as Rogers Cup champion since Andre Agassi successfully defended his title in 1995.
Roddick has mononucleosis
MASON, Ohio — Andy Roddick finally knows what’s been getting him down the past few months — a mild case of mononucleosis.
Roddick said on Saturday that one of several blood tests came back positive for mononucleosis. Doctors told him he’s probably had it for the past couple of months and should be nearly over it.
“I’m just glad that we found out something that was causing it,” said Roddick, who is getting ready for next week’s Cincinnati Masters. “It’s weird, the fear of kind of the unknown and not knowing what’s going on. There were some days where it was good, and some days where it was real bad. So it was like you would have one of those two or three good days, and it was like, ‘OK, you’re just being kind of a wimp.’
“So it’s nice to have a little bit of clarity moving forward. It’s not something that’s going to affect me, anything super-serious.”
Roddick has slipped to No. 11 in the world while struggling through a summer of out-of-character losses, making him wonder what was wrong.
Ivanovic’s injury puts Clijsters in final
MASON, Ohio — Kim Clijsters reached another title match with just 12 minutes of tennis and an empathetic hug.
Ana Ivanovic hurt her left foot during the opening set of their semifinal at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday, forcing her to withdraw in tears with the rest of her season in doubt.
“It sounds very similar to what I had with my left foot,” said Clijsters, who tore a muscle in her foot last April and missed nearly two months, including the French Open. “I hope it’s not that bad.”
Clijsters plaus Maria Sharapova of Russia in the finals.
