Man injured in U.S. 2 crash on July 9 dies
The Startup man is the 55th person to die on the highway since 1999.
SNOHOMISH -- A man injured in a four-car accident on U.S. 2 near Snohomish last month died later from his injuries.
John R. Spann, 65, of Startup, died July 20 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to the King County Medical Examiner's Office. The accident occurred July 9.
Spann becomes the 55th person since 1999 to die on U.S. 2 between Snohomish and Stevens Pass.
He was driving his Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle eastbound on U.S. 2 between Bickford Avenue and Highway 9 shortly before 11:30 a.m. when he crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane, witnesses said.
The SUV hit a horse trailer being pulled by a pickup, then hit another pickup and a semi-truck. The wreck touched off a fire that left the semi-truck's cab burned almost beyond recognition.
The accident occurred in an area with no median.
Spann was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition. The driver of the semi-truck was taken to Harborview by ambulance where he was treated for burns. The other drivers escaped injury.
Authorities closed U.S. 2 for more than five hours for investigation and cleanup.
