Community roundup: Alderwood Little League team wins District I crown

    The Alderwood 10-11 All-Star Little League baseball team won the District I championship last month in Mill Creek.

The Alderwood 10-11 All-Star Little League baseball team captured the District I championship last month at Freedom Field in Mill Creek.

Alderwood lost its opening-round game then ran off eight straight victories to claim the title.

In the championship game, played July 9, Alderwood defeated Pacific Little League 8-1 behind a complete-game performance by pitcher Kyler McMahan and a three-run home run by Bryce Milne. McMahan, Connor O'Brien, Brady Girgus and Jared Whitman all hit better than .500 over the tournament.

Other members of the Alderwood team included Ryley Johnson, Everardo Panell, Trent Mosier, Dane Evanger, Nolan Takeya, Danny Smart, David Cooper and Connor Haney.

The team was managed by Mike Girgus. His coaches were Ed Panell and Jim Cooper

Alderwood went on to post a 2-2 record at the state tournament in Selah.

Peeters defends title

John Peeters of Lake Goodwin repeated as the winner of the D Stock Hydroplane Class on Saturday at the American Power Boat Association's 2010 Stock Outboard National Championships in Oroville, Calif.

D Stock hydros are about 12 feet in length and can reach speeds of up to 80 mph.

Joyce first in marathon

Regina Joyce of Lynnwood won the Big Wildlife Run Marathon on Sunday in Anchorage, Alaska. Joyce, 53, completed the 26.1-mile course in 3 hours, 9 minutes and 49 seconds. She finished 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Davya Flaharty, 25, of Fairbanks, Alaska (3:10:09).

Linton named co-captain

Kristen Linton, a graduate of Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood, has been named one of three co-captains for the 2011 University of Washington women's gymnastics team.

Linton, who will be a senior, qualified for the 2010 NCAA championships. She finished 21st in the floor exercises with a score of 9.80.

The other co-captains announced last week by UW head coach Joanne Bowers are Haley Bogart of Woodside, Calif., and Samantha Wailor of Prior Lake, Minn.
