Snohomish County's jobless rate dips in July

But the slight drop is still higher than the state's unemployment rate of 8.9%.

Snohomish County added 300 jobs in July and saw its unemployment rate fall slightly, to 9.4 percent, according to a report released Tuesday.

The county's unemployment rate declined from 9.7 percent in June but remains higher than the state's unemployment rate of 8.9 percent in July.

"Job growth is still wobbly, but the private sector is showing encouraging signs of life," said Karen Lee, Employment Security Commissioner.

Snohomish County's private sector added 1,000 jobs last month but lost 700. Although the county's manufacturing and construction industries experienced some of the largest and most consistent job losses over the past two years, those industries have seen a jobs bounce in recent months, noted Anneliese Vance-Sherman, a regional economist for the state Employment Security Department, in her report Tuesday. Construction added about 500 new jobs in the county in July while the aerospace industry upped its payroll by 300 positions.

The state added 3,100 jobs in July, but payrolls were down 2,300 in July due to the elimination of an estimated 5,400 government jobs, the majority of which were federal census jobs. Most of the jobs lost last month in Snohomish County also were temporary Census jobs.

Snohomish County's unemployment rate for June was revised up to 9.7 percent from an earlier estimate of 9.6 percent. The state revised its unemployment estimate for June to 9 percent from the 8.9 percent reported originally. Year over year, Washington had 14,500 fewer jobs last month than in July 2009.

On the positive side, new unemployment claims in Snohomish County fell to 4,855 claims compared with 5,375 new claims in June. Roughly 1,292 residents had exhausted their unemployment insurance claims in Snohomish County in July, compared with 1,502 in June.

An estimated 306,218 people in Washington were unemployed and looking for work, and 239,773 people received unemployment benefits from Washington in July.

Overall, Snohomish County's employment picture looks similar to that of Washington state. While job losses have slowed, "jobs are not coming back as quickly as hoped," Vance-Sherman said.
