Harper holds lead over Berkey in 38th District
And in the 1st Legislative District, it isn't clear who will advance to the general election as more ballots are counted.
EVERETT -- Another round of ballot counting Wednesday didn't change the leader board in any primary races in Snohomish County. The new tally made a couple of contests less tight while keeping state Sen. Jean Berkey on track to defend her seat this fall.
In the closely watched 38th District, updated returns showed Democratic challenger Nick Harper continuing to lead Berkey and Rod Rieger, who appeared on the ballot as "prefers Conservative Party."
Harper is ahead with 4,990 votes to Berkey's 4,744 votes and Rieger's 4,432 votes. Harper's 246-vote margin is 21 votes more than on election night.
The two candidates with the most votes will face-off in the general election.
Snohomish County Auditor Carolyn Weikel said she expects about 35,000 ballots from around the county to be tabulated in the next few days. Vote results will be updated at 5 p.m. today.
In the 1st District, which includes Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, Brier and parts of Lynnwood and Edmonds, it's still unclear who will be the top finishers in contests for the two representative seats.
Democrat Derek Stanford, with 4,964 votes, is the leader in the battle to succeed Rep. Al O'Brien.
Only 238 votes separate the next three highest finishers. Republican Dennis Richter has 4,240 votes followed by Democrat Vince DeMiero with 4,077 and Republican Sandy Guinn with 4,002.
Republican Heidi Munson, with 48 percent of the vote, will be competing in November to replace Rep. Mark Ericks. It's not quite certain yet who will be her opponent as Democrats Luis Moscoso and Dave Griffin are dueling for the second spot in the general election. Moscoso went to bed with an 85-vote advantage and on Wednesday night it expanded to 311 votes. If the trend continues, he will advance.
In another closely watched race, state Sen. Steve Hobbs widened his lead on Republican Dave Schmidt from 303 votes to 407 votes. Hobbs, with 7,543 votes, and Schmidt, with 7,136 votes will be squaring off in November.
