On Thursday, Kingma said his top seven are the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, Brigham Young University, Arizona State University, Boston College, Pepperdine University and Vanderbilt University.
One of the state's highest-rated Class of 2011 recruits, Kingma has basketball scholarship offers from those seven prominent programs, as well as at least 13 other offers he had been considering, he said.
"Right now I'm pretty wide open with those (top) seven," said Kingma. "In my head, it pretty much changes every day where I want to go. But I think I'll have a pretty good idea in the next couple weeks."
Kingma, who helped lead Jackson High to the Class 4A state championship game in March, said he plans to trim his list again -- most likely to five schools he will visit this fall on official recruiting trips -- before his senior year at Jackson begins Sept. 8.
Of his seven favorites, Oregon, Washington and BYU "are the three that stand out to me right now," Kingma said. So far, he has scheduled one official recruiting trip: Oregon on Sept. 18. Kingma's older sister, Kristi Kingma, plays for the University of Washington women's basketball team.
Following an outstanding summer playing for the Seattle-based Friends of Hoop AAU team at high-profile tournaments across the country, Brett Kingma (6-foot-1, 160 pounds) collected a barrage of scholarship offers from prominent college programs. Previously viewed as a smooth-shooting scorer with excellent range, Kingma worked hard to round out other areas of his game, including ballhandling and defense. College coaches, like Washington's Lorenzo Romar, noticed how much Kingma improved and stepped up their recruitment of the guard.
According to Scout.com, Kingma is the state's fourth-best Class of '11 boys basketball recruit, behind Garfield's Tony Wroten, Kentridge's Gary Bell and Rainier Beach's Hikeem Stewart. Bell committed to Gonzaga University; Wroten and Stewart are uncommitted.
